CPCO and ADFO Statement on Resuming In-person Instruction in Schools

TORONTO: The Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario (CPCO) and l’Association des directions et des directions adjointes des écoles franco-ontariennes (ADFO) welcome the region-specific return of students to the classroom but seek further involvement of the Principal and Vice-Principal voice in the decision-making process.

The release from the Minister of Education on January 20 announcing that students in certain parts of Ontario will be returning to the classroom is welcome news for the regions where it is safe to do so. As educators and administrators, Principals and Vice-Principals recognize the importance of in-person learning, when and where it is safe to do so. As the government continues to work with the Chief Medical Officer of Health on the safe return of additional students to the classroom, we will continue to offer ourselves as a resource.

However, as partners in education, we continue to experience frustration with the process for developing additional precautionary measures. Without consultation or previous notice, Principals and Vice-Principals were informed that new additional daily screening measures are being expected of Principals and other education workers. These measures will require additional implementation and related administrative tasks in a very short timeframe. This will create extensive logistical challenges in an environment where administrators are already experiencing unprecedented levels of fatigue, frustration and burnout. We are always available and willing to provide input and offer solutions to the many challenges facing education in advance of these announcements being released.

We would like to recognize our members for their ongoing dedication. They continue to go above and beyond the call of duty in the best interests of their students, staff and communities that they serve. CPCO and ADFO will continue to advocate for proactive solutions to the challenges we are facing.
