It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that additional qualifications and/or postgraduate courses being used to meet the eligibility prerequisites for admission are acceptable to the Ontario College of Teachers. Contact Client Services at the Ontario College of Teachers well in advance when applying for admission to the PQP course with questions regarding eligibility prerequisites.
Admission eligibility document requirements - PQP Part 1
An applicant for admission to the PQP Part 1 must:
Hold an acceptable university degree
Hold a certificate of qualification or interim certificate of qualification
Have an entry on his/her certificate of qualification that shows a qualification in technological education for Grades 9 and 10 or a concentration in the intermediate division, and that shows any two of:
a concentration in the primary division;
a concentration in the junior division; and
either a qualification in technological education for Grades 11 and 12 or a concentration in the senior division.
Provide evidence of at least five years of successful teaching experience in a school providing elementary or secondary education, as certified by the appropriate supervisory officer or, in the case of experience outside Ontario, by the appropriate supervisory official, and
Hold or provide evidence of one of the following:
A Specialist or Honour Specialist qualification as indicated on the applicant’s certificate of qualification; and
successful completion of at least half the number of credits required to qualify for a master’s degree that is an acceptable university degree; or
an additional Specialist or Honour Specialist qualification as indicated on the applicant’s certificate of qualification.
A master’s degree for which the applicant was required to complete at least 30 post graduate credits or their equivalent, or a doctorate that is an acceptable university degree.
Successful completion of at least 30 post graduate credits or their equivalent, completed at an acceptable university.
To fulfill a requirement in clause 5 relating to the completion of graduate credits or their equivalent, the credits or their equivalent must have been completed in addition to any credits the applicant was required to complete to be granted a certificate of qualification or an interim certificate of qualification.
Qualifications in three subjects from AQ Schedule F - Technological Education is deemed to be equivalent to one specialist or Honour Specialist for purposed of addmision to PQP Part 1.
If you are applying on the basis of a half-master’s completion of 30 post graduate credits, or if your master’s degree is not yet recorded on your current Ontario Teacher Certificate of Qualification, you must arrange for an official transcript to be sent directly to CPCO and the Ontario College of Teachers
If any prerequisites are not shown on your current Ontario Teacher Certificate of Qualification, they must be verified through the Ontario College of Teachers public registry or you must submit a Conditional Admission to PQP Part 1 form
Admission eligibility document requirements - PQP Part 2
Eligibility for admission to the Principal’s Qualification Program Part 2 is prescribed by Regulation 176/10 – Teachers Qualifications, under the Ontario College of Teachers Act.
OCT Certificate of Qualification must show PQP Part 1 (which includes approved Leadership Practicum Proposal)
Documentation required
Candidates who completed PQP Part 1 with CPCO will need to ensure that a copy of the Leadership Practicum Proposal has been received in the CPCO office at least one week prior to the start of the Part 2 course.
Candidates who completed PQP Part 1 with another provider and whose PQP Part 1 is not currently recorded on their current Ontario Teacher Certificate of Qualification will need to submit a Conditional Admission to PQP Part 2 form verifying completion of PQP Part 1.
